The melody used in this carol is a 16th Century French dance tune. Thoinot Arbeau (1519-1563), using the pen name Jehan Tabourot, published this tune with the title “Branle de l’Official” in Orchésographie.
English composer George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848–1934) wrote the words. He published “The carol “Ding Dong! Merrily on High” in 1924 in The Cambridge Carol-Book: Being Fifty-two Songs for Christmas, Easter, And Other Seasons.
